Nant Designs showcases the artwork of Carole King – Printmaker and Bookbinder.
She lives in a converted pig barn in West Wales, situated amongst hills and fields about 10 miles from the sea. Her studio is another farm building, looking out over the surrounding countryside and her beehives at the top of the woods. From here she prints her paper designs and makes her books.
Caroles unique books are all made individually by hand, from cutting and stitching the paper to binding the covers and finishing each one with place-markers, endpapers and presentation boxes. The covers of the books vary from hand silkscreen printed papers with reinforced corners and spines to commercially available cloth and to more unusual found objects- butter pats, dominoes and walnut shells. Alternative and decorative bindings are combined with coloured threads and papers to create books with exposed spines which open to lay completely flat on a table.

The cover papers are hand drawn designs, transferred to silkscreens and printed using a rainbow of colours. Each layer of colour requires a separate screen so multicoloured designs may need to be printed 3 or 4 times before completion, creating a complex combination of colour ways from which to choose.
Carole carries out the complete process herself which makes each book unique. She is happy to accept commissions for particular books, enabling the buyer to choose their exact book.
Tunnel books are another type of book made by Carole: these unusual constructions comprise of a series of scenes with apertures, these are joined together like a miniature theatre set with a concertina binding. Some use hand printed sections, others collage or hand painted elements.
Recent commissions undertaken have included 300 notebooks covered in specially woven silk for the Clothworkers Guild, a book commemorating a vicars time in a parish with pictures supplied by his parishioners and a book of memoirs.
Carole regularly teaches bookbinding techniques to small groups at Studio 3 in Cardigan. Recent workshops have covered sketchbooks, long stitch binding, coptic binding, memory books and map fold books.
Nant Designs books are shown at Craft festivals nationwide during the year giving her the opportunity to talk through commissions, discuss techniques and meet other makers
