The Book Lounge
The Book Lounge was opened in September 2018 by Valerie Laycock, who took redundancy from her job of 13 years as a High School librarian, in July 2018. Being a Chartered Librarian I wanted to continue working with books and took the brave decision to open my own bookshop.
We are open 7 days a week in the picturesque town of Kirkby Lonsdale, the gateway to the Lake District. The High Street is predominately independent retailers and rarely has empty shops.
The shop was originally just selling used books as I didn’t think I could compete with other larger booksellers, but since then the shop has grown and developed and now sells new and used books along with a wide range of book themed gifts.
From Mugs to designer Yoshi Bookworm and Vendula Old Bookshop designer bags and purses, there is something for everyone. Spend time browsing the shelves with a “Farrer’s of Kendal” barista made coffee and piece of homemade cake, relaxing on the sofa in front of the fire, which is how the shop got its name, The Book Lounge. Coffee can also be made to takeaway.

I support lots of local authors and promote their books in the shop and on social media. I also arrange school author events, having organised events in my own school library for many years I have a lot of experience.
Now a member of the Booksellers Association, National Book Tokens are available to buy and spend in the shop, along with my own shop e-gift cards. 2020 saw the beginning of an online store which has brought new customers to the shop.
The shop has been described as a book lovers heaven with the bespoke book counter, book clock and staircase frequently being commented on and photographed by customers. Valerie Anne crafts are made on the premises, greeting cards, gift bags and book art. The Book lounge also provides photocopying and laminating services.
