Roslyn Whiting Leathercraft

Designs inspired by the Scottish Borders countryside

Roslyn Whiting Leathercraft was launched in 2011 with the aim of using traditional craftsmanship methods to produce quality leathergoods that are stylish and have a creative twist. Everything is handmade by myself in my workshop based in Melrose, in the middle of the Scottish Borders.

I take my inspiration from the beautiful surrounding countryside, from the meandering River Tweed to the Eildon Hills. My collection and products take their names from local places. Drawing on my creative skills I use my own product designs to make leather goods that are unique and have their own character.

Care and attention to detail is given throughout the whole process using traditional leatherwork methods where the focus is on not rushing, but making quality products that will last. All products are handmade and hand-stitched using the distinctive saddlery stitch. The environment is important to me and I source my materials as local as I can.

For my Eildon Collection I source all my leather direct from British tanneries. My buckles are solid brass and from one of the last foundries in Britain. My branded gift boxes, tissue paper and stickers are all made here in Scotland.

Another way I care for the environment it to only use vegetable tanned leather. This is the traditional way of preserving leather using tree bark. It takes longer to tan the leather but it uses less chemicals than chrome tanned leather. Vegetable tanned leather is also more tactile and each hide displays its own unique natural grain and character.

As you use your product, over time it will develop a beautiful patina. I use linen thread because it is a natural thread and still strong, selecting French linen thread because the way they twist it makes it even stronger than other linen threads.

My products are made in small batches so I have some items in stock. However, if you would like a bespoke item please check out my website or get in touch and we can discuss the options. With the Leaderfoot range, for example, you can choose the leather and stitching colour combinations you wish – helping you create your own style.

The experience of buying and using a quality product is special. If you need any help or have any questions please contact me.

Customers are welcome to my workshop by appointment only.
