Keith Shorrock Shaker Box Maker

The business started ten years ago. At that time the focus was on furniture making mostly to Keith’s own designs. However, after he attended a Shaker Box making course he began to move towards making these iconic boxes as a major part of his practice. He still does some furniture making but his main focus is the box making.

At first he concentrated on the traditional designs. He honed his skills and found the boxes were very popular. Selling at various art events he had a number of conversations with customers and fellow exhibitors about variations to the traditional box patterns. One particular conversation with a customer proved to be very significant. She told him about bringing a Shaker Box back from the USA which was designed as a sewing box. From then on Keith started to design a range of boxes suitable for quilters, embroiderers and people who sew, as well as the popular traditional ones.
Over the following years he had a lot of advice and ideas which he has implemented into his work. He began to supply work to a shop in Utrecht in the Netherlands. His contact there was asked by her customers if Keith could build a box with variations on the standard. ie deeper, wider or with more sections. These were wonderful challenges for Keith.
A lot of the work he made was sent abroad, to the Netherlands. France Germany, Switzerland and even the USA, the home of the Shaker Box. Keith has a good following here and abroad of people who collect his work.
Keith sells through Art and Craft events in the UK and some galleries close to where he lives. He finds meeting people at these events keeps ideas fresh and stimulates his thinking. The dates for events are on his website.
He is committed to using sustainable material. The veneer is one of the most environmentally friendly and economically sound ways of using wood. A tree will be converted into hundreds of square metres of usable veneer.
