Susan Luker is a ceramic artist creating unique abstract ceramic sculptures and pots firing in stoneware temperatures and Naked Raku firing.
Susan began her ceramic career in 1998 hand building sculptural pots and Raku firing them in her own hand-built kilns. Susan’s Raku kiln is made from an old oil drum and lined with a special fibre to retain the heat while firing her work. The pots are heated up in a kiln using a propane burner, this can take half an hour to reach 1000 degrees centigrade. The pots are then lifted from the kiln and placed into a prepared bed of oak shavings to cool and smoke. A crackle in the glaze forms and as the pots cool rapidly, carbon is absorbed in between the cracks and the finished results create wonderful random crackles, coppers and blues.

Susan’s new work is created during the winter months when there is a lull in Raku firings. It encapsulates the Devon landscape where she lives, walking and sketching is an important part of this creativity. She uses a strong white clay to withstand the three to four firings they go through in order to build up colour texture and a glazed surface. Susan studied ceramics and glass at Plymouth College of Art and Design. Setting up her own studio where she was able to work and teach full time. In 2000 Susan became an elected member of the Craft Potters Association and a Devon Guild selected member. Susan is also a member of the West Country Potters association and enjoys exhibiting in shows, festivals and art galleries around Devon.
