Colin Henwood boatbuilder has over 40 years experience and built a worldwide reputation for exceptional craftsmanship in the field of wooden boatbuilding. Concentrating on high quality and traditional techniques, he has built, restored and cared for some of the most unique and beautiful wooden Thames launches.
Over 30 years at his boatyard in Hambleden near Henley on Thames, he assembled a large team of highly skilled craftsmen at Henwood and Dean Boatbuilders with his wife Lucie Henwood. In 2016 he handed over the business to the next generation of makers in order to concentrate on building and restoring wooden boats and other commissions in his workshop in Long Whittenham.

From the understated elegance of small details to the meticulously fine wood finish, Colin’s passion and expertise is evident in every project he is involved with. In addition to boat building Colin is a fully insured marine surveyor and consultant specialising in wooden boats. As well as pre-purchase and insurance surveys, he is frequently commissioned to provide advice on all aspects of wooden boat ownership. He also runs practical courses at The Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis and at the Sylva Foundation Wood Centre where his workshop is based.
Throughout his career his work has received many awards and accolades and is regularly featured in Watercraft, Woodenboat and Classic Boat Magazine. He also published a book with renowned photographer Michael English called ‘Head, Heart, Hand, a Boatbuilder’s Story’.
