Lucy Ellie Bailey Art
Lucy Ellie Bailey Art – Lucy is a self-employed pet portrait and wildlife artist located in Cheltenham in the county of Gloucestershire. She specialises in bespoke hand-drawn animal portraits produced to commission. She also makes greetings/Christmas cards, and prints of her work.
As a huge animal lover herself, Lucy works extensively to creates personal and lively wildlife and animal portraits to capture the unique character and beauty of a client’s pet or favourite animal. Animals have always been very dear to her, and after graduating from the University of Gloucestershire with a First class Illustration degree, she decided to immerse herself in drawing animals as her main subject.
After advertising her animal art in local magazines, handing out flyers, and uploading her drawings to social media, she began to sell her work and gain commissions. Wildlife and animal art commissions can be a keepsake or as a gift for a loved one. Whether a client wants work done of a hamster or a fox, Lucy welcomes animals of all kinds, and is more than happy to discuss with the client any key features and individual aspects they would like (composition, whether it is a full body portrait or just head and shoulders, making an older pet look younger, etc.).
Getting a pet portrait done is a very personal thing as pets are so often like members of our family, so it’s important to get right.
As Lucy works from photos provided by the client, it is useful that good quality clear photos are sent as it helps her capture the pet in even more detail. The better the photo quality, the better the detail and realism of the finished coloured portrait. If someone is unsure as to what photos are suitable, Lucy can help and advise them. It can be very hard to get animals to pose in the same photograph together. This is no problem. If a client wants more than one animal in their portrait, they can send separate photos (provided they are of the same quality and taken at the same camera angle) which she can incorporate together.
She uses the highest quality professional materials including artist pencils Faber-Castell Polychromos, Caran D’ache Luminance, and Fabriano Artistico hot pressed watercolour paper. All of these materials are archival ensuring a client’s portrait will not fade and last a lifetime. Work can be delivered either mounted or unmounted, although it does add to the price. Although Lucy has a list of sizes which she usually works to, she is also happy to work to custom sizes, perhaps to fit an existing frame someone already has. The most popular sizes Lucy works to are:
- A5 (5.8” x 8.3”) – suitable for one animal
- A4 (8.3” x 11.7”) – suitable for up to two animals
- 9” x 12” – suitable for multiple animals and whole body portraits
- Square (13.7” x 13.7”) – suitable for multiple animals and whole body portraits
- A3 (11.7” x 16.5”) – best for multiple animals, whole body, or just a larger head/neck

Once a portrait is completed, clients are emailed a scan of the commission. It is very important that the client is happy with their order so this is an opportunity for them to request for any changes to the portrait. Once the work is approved, the portrait is securely wrapped in a cellophane sleeve and packaged with cardboard backing so it doesn’t get bent in the post.

Beautiful portraits and fantastic client service from this wonderful wildlife artist
I am delighted to have the opportunity to review and recommend the illustrator and wildlife artist, Lucy Bailey. I have commissioned Lucy on several occasions and will continue to do so as her finished artwork has a unique quality. Not only does she capture the subject as a realistic interpretation, but she also portrays its character and personality as well.
From a technical perspective, Lucy’s work is beautiful and accurate; she manages to reproduce an animal’s finest hair, its softest fur – it just makes you want to reach out and stroke her life-like recreations.
What’s so impressive is how versatile Lucy is as an artist. She can turn her hand to any animal it seems. It’s no understatement to find that she’s a huge animal lover – that’s clear in every tiny detail of her portraits.
Finally, any review of Lucy Bailey would not be complete without mentioning the service she provides to her clients. From my personal experience, and I know from others to whom I’ve recommended Lucy, she takes very great care to make sure you are happy from your first inquiry right through to the delivery of your portrait.
