June Croll Textiles
June Croll Textiles – I am a weaver/textile artist/tutor. Weaving by hand on traditional-style looms I produce unique contemporary woven textiles in my Norwich studio.
I work to commission and exhibit regularly, enjoying the challenge of working to a brief. Pieces have been purchased for private and public collections including Norwich Castle Museum.
My studio is situated in a beautiful building; a Tudor wool merchant’s house, currently home to Anteros Arts Foundation, in the heart of historic Norwich.
My signature work features delicate dyed and painted silk yarn, woven into gossamer-fine silk scarves and softly draping luxury shawls which may also contain alpaca merino and cashmere yarns. Each item is unique; I really enjoy colour and individually colour them with dye solutions, including natural plant dyes. Scarves can be purchased directly by emailing me for details, by visiting my studio by appointment, or through exhibitions and open studio events. Shawls and larger pieces are usually woven to commission.

Another key feature of my work is the production of highly original decorative woven art pieces. These range from framed woven transparencies in which the undulating threads of linen and silk almost appear to float, to larger freeform 3D exhibition pieces where I might experiment with including more unusual materials such as copper wire, and ‘found’ materials. I also weave wall hangings and gauzy window screens to commission.
There are several ongoing themes which influence my designs. I am an intuitive weaver and having absorbed the atmosphere, light, colours and feelings experienced through walking on the coast and wild open spaces I translate my responses freely in my work. Fragile endangered environments, the liminal areas between land, sea, and marsh, ripples of wind and water, skies and seasonal changes all fascinate me and inform my practice.
My current collection consists of a series of lacy weave silk scarves in soft and subtle colourways, muted tones woven in silk alpaca and merino, and luxurious silk stoles glowing with light, softly draping, all suggested by the effects of light on water at dawn and dusk. I’m also experimenting with miniature freeform woven tapestries.
A strong influence on my work is the long history of weaving in the city of Norwich, particularly the stunning Norwich shawls of the 19th century. Norwich weavers were renowned for the excellent quality of their work, dyeing skills too were highly regarded. I like to feel part of this heritage, taking inspiration from it, and interpreting it in my own way for the present day.
I am a qualified teacher and run community workshops on a variety of textile skills. I have recently worked as an artist/educator at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, as tutor for textile themed weeks with HF Holidays, and provide bespoke individual weaving tuition. I love being in my studio, losing myself in the creative process of designing, dyeing and weaving. but I also enjoy the stimulation of sharing ideas with others.
Visitors are welcome to my studio by appointment and during Open Studios whether it’s to chat about textiles, watch the weaving process, buy or commission work, or to arrange tuition. The centre is open 9.30-5 Tuesday to Saturday.
