Bottega YU

Beautiful Japanese paper yarn and textiles

Bottega YU studio was opened by Mayumi in Mendip, Somerset in 2014. She moved from Tokyo, one of the most energetic cities in the world, to the small idyllic village about 15 miles south of Bath.

Mayumi is a hand weaver. She studied & trained in UK and brings an enquiring exploration of traditional Japanese crafts of weaving and origami techniques to her innovative work whilst striving for, and respecting, the purity of form for which the Japanese culture is so revered.

She is always developing woven textures and patterns in various types of yarns to make beautiful and intriguing fabrics. Recently, her main focus has been the exploration of the potential of Japanese paper yarn. Paper is made from Manila hemp fibres using a Japanese paper making method, and the paper is then turned into yarn. It is a very unique, fascinating and sustainable material.

She designs and makes various types of fabric, from fashion to interior. You will see examples of her work on her website.

Recently she introduced a new series of lighting, AKARI, inspired by Isamu Noguchi, who has developed Japanese aesthetic conceptions of light and shadow. In this series, off the many properties of paper yarn fabric, she has chosen to develop its capability to be fashioned into sculptural objects.

Her lamp coverings show various sculptural forms, both abstract and geometric. Origami folding creates strength and the resulting faceted shapes produce the variety of light and shadow which she loves.

Her wall hangings have subtle colours and shapes; they can be viewed from a distance, but close up can reveal the intricacies of the design and weaving.

Her fashion items are beautiful and unique

  • Hand woven Japanese paper yarn fabric
  • Unique lighting
  • Bespoke fashion item
  • Colours from nature

Tell her what you want then she will make a unique bespoke item for you. Her colour collection derives from nature too, from daffodil flowers yellow to deep indigo blue.

She takes part in open studio events as well as exhibitions.
