Classic Woodcarving

Classic Woodcarving is based in North London, from where I offer woodcarving, lettering and gilding services.

I specialise in ornamental carving and create bespoke work in both contemporary and historic styles. Commissions can range from small lettering projects such as house signs or plaques, through to large scale relief carvings or 3D works. A bespoke carving can make a unique, personalised gift for a wedding or other special occasion, and I would be pleased to discuss ideas.

I take much of my inspiration from the natural world and particularly enjoy undertaking works with a natural theme. I also greatly admire the work of historic carvers which can be seen in churches, cathedrals and other historic buildings around the country. Historic themes can be adapted to create stunning modern works with a nod to the UK’s wonderful craft heritage.

I was trained at the prestigious City and Guilds of London Art School, which teaches the traditional skills which date back centuries. Preparation for a new piece of work starts with sketches, or clay models, or both, depending on the scale of the project. The drawings/models are then translated into wood. The joy of carving for me is in helping the beauty of the wood to shine through, but carvings can also be partially or fully painted or gilded.

As a keen environmentalist, I always prefer to work in native British or European woods. Lime is a firm favourite for carvings, particularly those will be painted or gilded, thanks to its smooth texture and even grain. Where the wood will be shown in all its natural glory, there is a wonderful variety to choose from. Oak, for example, has a beautiful, distinctive grain, whereas fruit woods can offer rich colours. I will happily discuss options for your commission.
